The Karl's Appliance that sat on East Clinton Street in Newton for 30 years was moved to a larger location on Main Street in Sparta in 2008. Since 1941 when the business was founded, Karl's Appliance has opened stores in Montclair, Sparta, Madison, Orange, Fairfield, and most recently, Paramus. Schwartz took over the family business in 1965 after graduating from George Washington University with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He said the business was initially established by his father, Karl, and his grandfather, Barney, as a tire retail store.
